Which paper should you choose for business cards?

A business card is often the first branded item a client actually holds. However good the design, thin, floppy or cheap-looking paper spoils the first impression. Here is a simple guide to what matters when choosing paper for business cards.

1. Thickness and weight

The recommended weight for business cards is 300–350 g/m². Paper lighter than 250 g/m² bends easily and feels unreliable. Premium cards use 400 g/m² and heavier board, or two sheets laminated together (duplexing).

  • 300 g/m² – the optimal everyday choice
  • 350 g/m² – stiffer, more premium feel
  • 400 g/m² and above – luxury cards people remember

2. Surface finish

Matte

No glare, text is easy to read and you can write on it with a pen. Ideal for a calm, professional style.

Gloss

Colours look more vivid, which works well for photographic designs. However, it reflects light and is hard to write on.

Textured designer papers

Linen, leather-grain, felt, pearlescent and metallic papers add a tactile dimension. People hold such a card longer and feel it with their fingers, which helps the brand stick in memory.

3. Paper colour

Not every card has to be white. A foil-stamped logo on black, navy, red or kraft paper looks striking. If you plan white or light ink on coloured stock, confirm it with your printer in advance.

4. Finishing options

  • Lamination – protects against moisture and scuffing; soft-touch lamination gives a velvety feel.
  • Foil (hot stamping) – gold, silver or coloured metallic details.
  • Embossing – raised logos and lettering.
  • Rounded corners – a modern, softer look.

5. Compatibility with the printing method

The paper must suit the printing method. Digital presses accept certain weights and surfaces, while some textured and dark papers give the best results with offset, screen printing or foil. Ask your printer which papers they work with before buying.
